DBWI: Weaker Socialist movement in the US

As we all know, Socialism is a strong force at the local level in the US despite there never being a Socialist president and the Socialist party has some influence in Congress and the Senate.

But what if the Socialist movement in the US was weaker? What would that mean for it's domestic and international policies? And what about foreign policy? I think maybe US would have gotten into the Great European War..............

Without socialists raising a little hell, we might not have more quickly to replace lost manufacturing jobs in the 1980s ? ?

I admit this is probably waxing too much on the dystopian side, but I suppose it could happen.

In a real flight of fancy, maybe big pharmaceutical companies successfully patent, say, a breast cancer gene? ? ? Mind you not merely the diagnostic procedure, but the gene itself. And of course making the test really expensive as society splits even further into rich and poor.

Or alright, alright . . . a lower court upholds such a patent, but is overruled by the Supreme Court. We have to keep it realistic and all.
