DBWI: We mourn the death of Massachusetts Governor Ted Kennedy

In 1970, Edward M. Kennedy was elected Governor of Massachusetts. The longest serving Governor in the USA to date (38+ years), his body is lying in repose at the State House in Boston.

The new governor Martha Coakley has called for a week of mourning.

As we reflect on the life and career of Governor Kennedy, what do you consider his most memorable accomplishment (and there were many)?

His health care program in Massachusetts was impressive. Gov. Kennedy was able to show the country just how such a program could work, lending a lot of power to President Clinton when he pushed through a similar program in 1993. Without that, it's completely possible that the Republicans really would have taken Congress back in 1994!

Of course, there's also gay marriage, which he was able to push through in 1995, making Massachusetts the first state to do so. Today, almost every state has at least allowed same-sex civil unions, largely thanks to Gov. Kennedy.
