DBWI: War of 1812

What if the United States had not defeated the Royal Navy and won the War of 1812, annexing all of the renaming British North American territories into the Union? Would the French Catholics have faced similar persecution had their time with the English lasted? What would have become of America? Of the BNA territories? Of the natives in the Great Plains and the far west?

Well, there probably would be an independent Canada at some point, for one. Fans of classic Counter-Factual history works may remember that, Harry Joe Stirling wrote a book on this back in 1976, called "For Want of a Letter", in which a simple POD leads to the butterflying of the Battle of Welland in August, 1812.....it goes on from there, and the U.S., though still somewhat victorious, is forced to discard any plans to forcefully annex Canada.

Though it should be noted that the former Rupert's Land didn't fully come under U.S. control until about 1905 or so IOTL(and that everything north of Churchill Bay going west to the Rockies of the North was eventually made into the Confederation of Nunavut in 1947).

You mean the Royal Navy not beating the US'S...cos that statement makes no sense otherwise...if the US doesn't beat the Royal Navy, how do they win the War>?

and im trying to say how can they still win at all if they couldnt beat the royal navy, in any universe?

He's saying What if they didn't defeat the royal navy and win the war-meaning they defeated the royal navy and won the war, so what if that didn't happen.

Not: What if they didn't defeat the royal navy, and still won the war. The whole premise is them not winning the war...

Well, better relations between Britain and America, for one, unless Britain wins the war. It's possible that Manifest Destiny wouldn't have kicked in, and the United States would have been content with staying the size it was, instead of conquering half of Mexico to add more slave states to balance the free states brought by Canada. A later end to slavery might have happened, and if America does go ahead and conquer Mexico anyways, the Mexicans might not be received as well, due to the fact that they're the only Catholics in the country, as opposed to the Canadians, who've been there for at least a few generations.

I can see that, though I'd like to point out that Santa Anna started that war, and that half of the states that were supposedly supposed to be slave states ended up rejecting slavery(which is something that people like R.B. Rhett had feared which is why many Fireeaters actually opposed conquering more of Mexico); hell, California even made it a felony to bring slaves into the state at all! Why do you think the Civil War started as early as it did(November 1862 to be precise)? The Seven-Year Program initiated by the 14th Amendment under President Fremont didn't sit too well with many conservative Southerners(and copperhead Northerners), even if it did help appease many of the former Mexicans, most of whom were against slavery from the beginning.

OOC: This basically has to happen via a successful Napoleonic invasion of Britain, with no invasion of Russia, and Nappy doesn't invade Spain and put his brother on the Spanish throne. Then, assuming the Royal Navy is somehow:confused::confused::confused: taken by the French following the conquest of Britain, the USA has freedom of the high seas. The USN has no ships-of-the-line, it can't defeat the Royal Navy.
