DBWI: Walt Disney lightens up Fairy Tale Movies

The Disney movies Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cindella and Sleeping Beauty are liked because they maintain the same feelings of the original Brothers Grimm Stories. But what if he lightned up the stories to make them kid friendly?

It would not have worked. Most of those stories were a few pages at most in the Brothers Grimm versions, who did not make the stories up on their own but instead collected them. Dark humor and the implications fo the rape, mutilation, and attempted cannibalism were necessary to making a feature length film, while removing them would mean you could fit the movies into a commercial break. If you want light hearted try the Warner Brothers competing Mother Goose based stories.

Disney would have bankrupted in the 1950's, maybe 60's if they can get an outlier hit. There's just no market for feature length children's animation; they don't have the attention spans to appreciate anything longer than a Looney Tunes short, or an episode of Scooby-Doo. It makes no financial sense to spend all the money involved in painstakingly animating a film for people who can't sit through the whole thing.

And I mean really, can you imagine an adaptation of the Hunchback of Notre Dame made for children? Would there be some big musical number where Frollo complains that he can't bang Esmerelda because he's a clergyman? Get real.
