OOC: There seems to be a theme on the post-1900 forum, so...here we go.

Today at ten past twelve, the United States of America - in defiance of international sanctions - detonated a second H-Bomb in an off-shore test exceptionally close to their maritime border with the Republic of New England. President Blackstone today declared this to be a 'legitimate demonstration of America's right to self-defence against the treacherous warlord states that surround us, and their foreign masters'.

The leaders of the other nations of North America - including the Republic of Greater California, the Dominion of Canada and the Dominion of Newfoundland - have condemned the test, as have wider alliance systems including the British Commonwealth, European Union and the Asia-Pacific Co-Prosperity Alliance. Prime Ministers Cameron and Abe have been particularly vocal in their condemnation of a 'rogue state that refuses to recognise the march of history'.

So. Is this the beginning of another round of sanctions, or the opening shots of a Third North American War?

OOC: This one is in a universe where the US split up in the 20th century - like, for instance, the Second Civil War in Kaiserreich or @Chipperback 's Willa Cather-verse. I've deliberately made the rogue US President a fictional character to avoid things getting too pointed ;)

I'm surprised the Russian Empire still props up the crazy "MacArthurist" US regime which arose after the Second Civil War in the 1930s after the catastrophic Presidency of Andrew Mellon. I'm sure the Russians are looking for any excuse to throw the US under the bus right now with this latest antic of the US government. Same for the Chinese Republic, who is only allied with Russia as they both don't like Japan.

True. Japan's allies in Asia would be bad enough for China and Russia, but Japan, their Asian allies and Greater California form a bloc powerful enough that both felt they needed allies further afield to counter it...

Russian Prime Minister Alexei Navalny has announced that the Russian Empire condemns the latest H-Bomb test but also urges that the sides go back to the negotiating table with similar statements coming from the governments of the Republic of China, the Federal Republic of India, the Arab Federation, and the German Empire.

I'd say everyone's willing to negotiate something, but the US still refuses to recognise the post-US successor nations which is a necessary first step to any successful negotiation. That and the discriminatory nature of the US government - the Hispanic and African-American populations of California and the Mormons of Deseret would want some kind of restitution for their citizens who fled from the US at an absolute minimum...

OOC: I kinda see Russia being the China to the US' North Korea.

OOC: Good reading :)

Kaiser Fredrick VI has recently, after pressure from the socialists in the Reichstag, decided to cut off all trade from the rump United States.

Rogue state? The United States only has these weapons to defend itself from the tyranny of the warlords surrounding it.

Everyday, the warmongers attempt to draw the world closer to war with threats to slaughter innocent civilians and sanctions. This was simply a warning to the world that freedom will be protected in the United States.

And yet, it's the US that continues to claim the other North American nations as its 'sovereign territory', thus perpetuating the regional military build-ups...

As things stand, Greater California has one of the best national healthcare systems in the world. Imagine how even better it would be if they didn't have to keep such a large military budget...

I hear that the Canadian government is seriously contemplating bringing back the draft.

Wouldn't surprise me. California and Deseret have already had the universal draft since the 60s.

Which, as a silver lining, did a lot for women's rights in both nations. Granted female draftees used to only be rear-echelon, clerical and MP units to free up men solely for combat (though even then women got the same combat training) but it was still symbolically significant. And these days, with more female draftees and professionals in front-line units...
