DBWI: Ukrainian Independence?

As we all know, the Ukraine is an important military frontier of the Russian Federation, and still home to the Black Sea part of the Russian fleet. However, at the collapse of the USSR, there was a call to seperate Ukraine. Could it have happened?

Both Ukraine and Belarus have some very close cultural similarities with Russia, so I don't find it weird they chose to stay in the Russian Federation.

interesting

I am guessing that Belarus would stay with Russia and Ukraine being made by ethnic borders.
That is just my guess.

No, George Bush Snr was dead on the nail when he told Rukh to stop being so stupid and stated that the US could not foresee any chance of an independent Ukraine

OOC: Wait, "stay" in the RF? What POD are we talking about here?

OOC: I suppose that's what the people ITTL would say. We would call it "USSR splits in a different way" or something.

So, maybe, the RSFSR doesn't secede from the USSR, thus leading to a different split?

OOC: Well it's just form the way you phrased it it follows that ITTL Ukraine and Belarus joined the Federation, presumably also sometime before the breakup of the USSR. I don't see why they would do it that way, instead of just preserving the USSR. Now if like in OTL the Federation secedes from the USSR, and then Ukraine and Belarus join, kinda makes sense but I don't see Ukrainians happy with it, and these were volatile times, and then they would have joined *after* the breakup of the USSR, while the way you phrased it implies they joined before the USSR breakup.
