DBWI: Truman Defeats Dewey

What would've happened had the unpopular Democratic incumbent, Harry Truman, defeated his Republican opponent, Thomas Dewey, in the 1948 presidential election?

Then we prob would never have one of our greatest presidents. And besides I totally think Douglas Mcarthur would be president earlier.

OOC: List of Presidents:

34. Thomas E Dewey (Republican), 1949-1957 (VP: Earl Warren)

35. Douglas MacArthur (Republican), 1957-1961 (VP: Everett Dirksen)

36. Michael DiSalle (Democratic), 1961-1969 (VP: Stuart Symington)

37. John W Byrnes (Republican), 1969-1973 (VP: ?)

Doubt Truman would be as tough on communism as Dewey. Dewey's foreign policy was pretty good IMO. I doubt domestically Truman would've gotten much done, he had pretty poor relations with Congress.

Yeah, but it was only by 98 votes. Here is how Iowa would had voted if we had used the electoral college proportionally:

3 W, 3 D, 3 T

The Democrats did contest the results in that state, which wouldn't have helped them in any case

I know that McArthur had a 58% polling when he was elected, but perhaps, somehow, a Truman presidency might have butterflied him away

If Truman had to deal with Macarthur during the Korean War, I could see Truman sacking the general for political reasons

Indeed. Maybe, unlike Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Walker, they wouldn't resort to burn Pyongyang to the ground

It's just a pity that caused the Korean population, and a lot of Americans, to turn against the war. It was a very bad mistake. It's a good thing Byrnes fixed all that.
