DBWI: Totalitarian dictatorship based on 1984

I just finished reading 1984 and it's rather chilling to say the least.

Do you think it's possible that a 1984-like regime could take over a country and so systematically brainwash the public while totally monitoring all communications? That would be very depressing indeed.

OOC: We have OTL North Korea acting as our 1984 example. How realistic would a North Korea-like regime be anyways?

Fiji came pretty damn close after the Fijian Genocide. Almost a fifth of the population was slaughtered, most of them the most productive citizens, all in the name of some twisted Polynesian ethno-nationalism. We're lucky that the Aussies were willing to intervene. If they hadn't, that nutcase Ilikimi Naitini would have taken power. He was definitely capable of shutting Fiji off from the world. Fiji is also far enough away from everywhere that it theoretically could shut itself off.

Anywhere else though, it gets difficult. other places are all far too geographically linked to the rest of the world, they wouldn't be able to shut down the flow of information for long.

Maybe if Tsar Nicholas II survived a little longer, he would have been able to issue his planned Fundamental Laws, preventing ministers from being appointed by, or responsible to the Duma. With that, you might have had the Bolsheviks seize power and there would have been a violent revolutionary, rather than political transition. Those guys were pretty radical, and tried to do the same OTL, but the Duma had become too strong for them to succeed, which it wouldn't have been if that moron Nicholas II got his way.

EDIT: D'oh! I think I might have just butterflied 1984. But that's kida hard to avoid since 1984 was a criticism of an already existent trend.

We can say the SRs controlled the Duma and Orwell was criticising them.

ANy country with the ability to close it borders and estabish sufficient control of the media can do this.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is already like 1984.

They HAVE that level of total control.

what do you mean "IF" ? Have you read whats been happening in Iran since they declared themselves a Technocratic republic ? The head of state calls himself Supreme Brother for god sake ! Every other month they switch from being allied or at war with Kurdistan and Balochistan and no one inside the country bats an eye.
