You’re all overlooking Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), given that he wrote and directed Iron Man. Cruise is the guy that picked him and their combo work makes the rest of the MCU look exactly like what it is—entirely computer generated action interspaced with live actors albeit in a studio with more green screens. The contrast between Cruise’s Iron Man (yeah yeah and the basically unlimited budget for the sequel) and the rest of the MCU is… stark.

No wonder Cruise bailed after the Avengers, dude jumped out of a real airplane with the full Iron Man suit on at fifty thousand feet. After that, who wants to play act in front of a green screen? He certainly doesn’t need the money.

Yeah and mr Phenoix play it very well ,specially how was his fall from the greatest surgeon to his rehabilitation. Still hope he can pull the secret avengers idea as the spearhead of that subfranchise

So..did Downey Jr have a movie soon to be release or got postponed?

Sherlock Holmes 3 was supposed to come out this year, but was postponed to 2020. That's probably going to be Downey's last chance for a comeback. Given that he's made efforts to rehabilitate himself in the past year, with help from his wife Susan, it just might happen. But it will be tough. From Downey's standpoint, he's in the endgame now.

To be fair, Del Toro's work on Doctor Strange was quite impressive. And to be clear, Cruise only left the franchise recently after the final Avengers movie, not the first one that came out back in 2011.
