DBWI: TL-191

Have anybody seen it? Its a Yankwank to be realistic.

OOC: We are from TL-191 looking at OTL written by Turtledove. No RP allowed.

There were many original elements that set it apart from other AH; D-Day, the landings in the Pas de Calais (IIRC; it's been a while since I read the last few books), in particular have no BTL equivalents that I can think of. (OOC: BTL = Base TimeLine)

I was somewhat sad to see the fate of the Socialist Party, though the Democrats IATL seem to be heading in that direction at the end of their SGW-analogue.

I don't think it's that much of a Yankwank; all it requires is for McClellan to get a bit of pure luck, and quite frankly if the entire Rebel plan falls into his hands he should have been able to utterly destroy Lee's army.

I was somewhat skeptical of the US entry into the Great War; the Germans had to be mind-mindbogglingly stupid to bring the US in; they didn't even try to cover that telegram up! It's more of a German-screw than anything. And a Japan-screw, with them being the only recipients of superbombing IATL.

Yes.

I personally think this "Nazi" Party is an obvious copy of the Freedom Party. They even have an Anton Drexler as founder!

Probably the most plausible ATL Turtledove has ever written. Sure it's a bit of a 'USA' wank, but more than that I think its a realistic depiction of how a unified USA could/would fare without any comparable enemies on the NA continent.

Without a CSA to create a balance of power and the UK / Canada neutral to friendly Mexico certainly isn't going to pose a threat considering the mess they were in at the time.

I mean look at the USA after it definitively 'annexed' Canada and the CSA, massive economic growth and prosperity. Now imagine 150 unbroken years of that as opposed to the last 40-50, not having to worry about the CSA, perfidious Albion, and secure in its territories.

The two countries that get ultra screwed are Japan and Germany, but, if this ATL USA went against either of them at any time its reasonable that both would be screwed especially if the US is on the same side as Russia and Britain as it is here...

read it, loved it.

ha ha, poor Japan!

can you imagine that big galoot MacArthur "mentoring" the emperor of Japan?

but with TDR, how dare he!!!!!!

NO ONE PUTS TEDDY IN A CORNER!

The cliffhanger end sounded sorta depressing though for the East Europeans. With the Red Army of Communist Russia, which was called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, in most of Eastern Europe, it doesn't sound like they'll be free for long.

Also there were bits of this Chinese Civil War. What's that all about?

I heard that Turtledove is going to post an "epilogue" book called Aftershocks that deals with the TL-191 world up to 2011. But the info could be wrong...

OOC: You decide if its wrong or right.

Oh, I hope he does. It sounds like relations with Russia are spiraling down pretty fast.

I've heard that Aftershocks won't be published (as a full novel, anyway), but Turtledove has put some tidbits about the post-war world out:

1. The fate of northern Choson won't be pleseant
2. The Shah of "Iran" will be overthrown, and a republic based on Shia teachings will be instituted (porbably based off the BTL uprising of '79, although BTL the Germans simply superbombed Tehran into a parking lot and made them take the Shah back, so why the ATL US doesn't do that is beyond me)
3. He waxed long about how Rumania will be ruled by a man who thinks he's Vlad Tepes returned (Turtledove's from Carpathia, so I think this provincialism is understandible, if annoying - it is the sole reason he smashed Austria up)

Austria-Hungary could have broken up, it almost did during the Hungarian revolution of 1848 and again with Franz Ferdinand's death and the FGW. That nation has always had volatile politics since it incorporates so many different ethnic groups, like the US's monstrous economic growth, AH's relative political stability is a recent thing and more a product of the SGW than anything else.

Still, Turtledove does take some malicious glee in dismembering the region. I mean I feel sorry for the Balkans, especially what he called, Yugoslavia...

He's brutally harsh to a hole load of peoples. Jews, Germans, Poles. Has he got a hard-on for attacking various ethnic groups?!

I still don't understand how the Germans beat France though, I mean, how can a country lead by such pig-headed buffoons get so lucky so many fucking times?

1.) That doesn't sound good. Let me guess, a Chinese-backed Communist regime?
2.) Iran becoming a Shia theocracy? That's new, you would think Wahabbist Saudi Arabia was bad.
3.) Vlad Tepes reincarnated? That sounds awesome, if not perpetually disturbing. Last I checked Rumania, it had Moldavia and Bessarabia. Why is it smaller now?

Well, he is taking a page out of history, I mean the Jewish Holocaust uses the template of the CSA's African murder machine. Arabs and Muslims in general get off a lot easier as well, actually having some control of their natural resources (even if their leaders steal and fritter it away), it's a hell of a lot better deal than what happened to Tehran, Baghdad, Riyadh and Dubai IRL. Some ethnic groups got off better as well. The Brits, Scots and French certainly did, as did the Chinese... eventually...

Basically my theory is he took a list of all the ethnic groups in the world, put them on ping pong balls, spun them around in a Bingo randomizer... thing and pulled them out. I mean you can't have half a chapter on the 'East Timor genocide' without something like that... ;)
