DBWI:The USSR Defeats Nazi Germany

It's never really been talked about in depth before here, so I was wondering what you guys think.

I think they could, but I'm just not exactly sure how.

Oh, easily. Goerring was gambling and he got very, very lucky. Britain and France were ready to step in with mediation until the battle of Riga. If you have the Soviets go with the original plan for their troops in the Kiev salient in 1940, the Germans are pretty well for it. It was Stalin's meddling that resulted in the ineffectual Minsk offensive. The original plans called for Tukhachevskiy to take charge of considerable parts of the STAVKA reserves and relief Sevastopol. He was then to force Perekop, link up with Vasilevskiy's armoured forces, and launch a holding attack on Kherson. A massive offensive from Kiev would then trap the main part of Germany's striking power in the Dniepr bend and destroy it.

Stalin vetoed the plan because it was too ambitious. It was highly optimistic, but as we know the German troops in the Crimea were running out of bullets at the time. It would have exceeded all expectations.

The consequences are obvious: the Russians squash Finland like a bug and annex the Baltics and the better part of Poland. The Germans withdraw what they can salvage and plead Britain ad France to step in. Japan goes into conniptions.

What becomes of the Nazi regime after this point is interesting: I think Goerring can slither his way through. But while some think the main reason Stalin was deposed was the humiliating defeat at Germany's hands, isn't a short victorious war only going to make Zhukov and the other putschists more confident? No, I think they go ahead. Sooner, if anything. Meanwhile, Britain and France will cosy up to whetever regime has emerged in Germany, and Yugoslavia should shake itself to pieces just on time.
