DBWI: The USS Ohio was just launched

Our last battleship, the USS Ohio was launched. We have 17 new battleships since Roosevelt, which are all to stand in our fleet for a long time. The Montana-class battleships, are to be broken up into an Atlantic Fleet to be equipped with new nuclear shells in case of war. I am to be joining up on the USS Enterprise (CV-6), which will serve in the Atlantic for the time being.

I thought it was rather bad form of the Russian ambassador to carry on laughing hysterically the whole time. At least the British ambassador looked properly envious. At least I think that was envy. It might have been disbelief.

Proabably envy . Sure they are expensive but they make nice weapons platforms. They were nice for fire support on a decent number of occasions. A number of Communist backed countries which were in the Pacific Islands were squashed in part due to battleships using their 16 inch guns as fire support. OOC: That is the only thing I can think of why the US would build battleships after WWII.

Ah yes, the people's republic of Micronesia *wince*. Not one of our finest hours that. I just assumed it was the only way Regan and later Clinton could justify not lowering taxes. Those things are expensive. OOC: Event that doesnt seem to be enough. I'm basically assuming they're the ultimate pork project with parts contracted out to every state in the union, along with no real tax cuts since the 80's, or less then there were.

BBs are overrated anyway. It's just a waste of money for the USN, like the MQ-8, CGX, F-35C and DDG-1000.

Does the USN really need all these high-tech rubbish to fight a bunch of pirates roaming the high seas in inflatable Japanese dinghy boats?

I've even heard they're going to put lasers on the BBs. What is the SECNAV smoking? Hell, even the Russian Federation knows better than to throw away money at this crap.

Battleships were originally meant to kill other battleships. Now that the Russians have modified their old Stalin-class into huge floating ICBM silos, it stands to reason that battleship-on-battleship combat will feature shooting down nuclear bombs.

Hence, SDI-heritage lasers.

And the madness comes full circle.

OOC: It's 1948...

Well the USS Montana has tested her nuclear shells, and well, we won't go to the Azores for at least a hundred years...
