President Al Bundy

It's election time in the USA. And it's the first election since the end of WWII and the beginning of the cold war between the US and the USSR. But it is one of the most important elections in the US History so far. One the one hand we have Democratic President Huey Long, who seeks his third term since he won the presidency against Alf Landon in 1940. But Longs radical policies made him unpopular in certain circles. Mostly in wealthy, conservative and anti-communist ones. But he's popular within the "common people" and within all races, especially the Afro-Americans, since Long did much for them. And not to forget, he won the war in Europe and in Asia.
His running mate is Henry Wallace, which stood by his side since 1940. And he will be probably his successor in 1952 or whenever Long decides to retire. And Wallace is even more disputed, because of his suspected sympathy of Stalin and the USSR. But he's the Vice President anyway...
The Republicans are torn apart. Officially, Joseph McCarthy runs for presidency. His stern anti-communism made him popular within conservatives and anti-communists. And he had a considerably base when he was appointed. Though he faced heavy resistance in the liberal wing, led by Thomas Dewey. An important fact as we'll see.
Originally, McCarthy wanted to appoint Douglas MacArthur as his running mate. A war hero and very popular in the US. And a man from the military. But then, other events came between...
Southern Democrats, dissatisfied with Longs politics, especially with his desegregation appointed an own presidential candidate. Senator Strom Thurmond. They had a solid base in the deep south. Something McCarthy wanted to use for his own benefit. So he dumped MacArthur and chose Thurmond as his running mate. But this made him completely unpopular within liberals and even in his own party, as some felt it as a betrayal against the own party.
That's why the liberal wing of the G.O.P arranged an own ticket. They nominated Thomas Dewey as their candidate, and Dewey chose Douglas MacArthur as his running mate, a move which enraged McCarthy, as he felt (or realized), that he lacked support from his own party. The republicans are indeed torn apart...
So who are you going to vote? Long/Wallace, McCarthy/Thurmond or Dewey/MacArthur?
