DBWI: The Turtledove TL-191 Discussion Thread.

Seems that the next parts has been anounced: Cold War decolonisation(ooc: post ww2 up to the cubacrisis), Cold War Bear and the falcon(ooc: from the cuba crisis to Reagan elected), Cold War moviestars(ooc: 80s):

And then American world; Nothing comes without a prize(ooc: 90s)
American world; Walker, Texas Ranger(ooc: The Bush years, well he was from texas and i think W stands for Walker)

ooc: Can we discuss these years now, please:)
Those "books" were revealed to be an April Fool's Day prank perpetuated by IGN. They tend to do stuff like that.

ooc: The Kennedy that died wasnt president, it was his father, in Fatherland:D
ooc: No, I was saying that Joe Kennedy, Jr. was president in the TL-191 world, and his death in Turtledove's books (a death that happened OTL) was a reference to OTL Turtledove killing off Jimmy Carter. Harris's book, which I've never read, had nothing to do with my comment.

OOC: Yes ...

Along with The Third Book, in The American World Series ...

American World: Dial O for Obama, All about The United States' LOVE Affair with its First Black President!

:p

Yeah ...

The First Post-Civil War Presidents to be Unabashedly from The South, Were a Pair of TEXANS of All Things ...

Obviously an Homage to The Reformed Texas Republic, That was Declared at The Close of The Second Great War!

:p

Not counting Johnson the second president from the South was a Georgian.

Actually, Not Counting Johnson ...

The First President from The South was The Virginian, Woodrow Wilson!

As for The Rest ...

Are you Forgetting that Irascible Texas Duo of Ike and LBJ?

Eisenhower was from Kansas. And I meant unabashadly from the South and therefore Wilson doesn't count. I just meant that the previous poster forgot the Georgian when he mentioned the first two presidents being unabashadly fromt he South being Texans. I should have been more clear.

Right on both counts. He also owned the Texas Rangers baseball team, which arguably makes him a Texas Ranger ;)

And that's another thing that really annoys me. The entire reason behind the "Zimmerman Note" was because the United States was sending supplies to Britain, Britain for god sakes! And honestly why would the Germans make such an offer to Mexico? Mexico was poor and the only major producer of arms in North America was the United States itself and Germany sending arms to Mexico sounds impractical to begin with, and even after all that the reword for Mexico would be useless desert with an angry English population? The whole concept of it is to ASB for the Germans to even consider!

More to the point, if the Mexican Army's general staff could figure all of this out (and they supposedly did an analysis at the request of President Carranza) why couldn't the war planners of Imperial Germany, by any measure the best in the world at the time? They had to know Mexico would smell this one for the rotten deal it was.

What are any of you talking about? The books mention only two Southerners as president - Andrew Johnson (barely) and Woodrow Wilson (in European Front).

Back on topic, we should have to give Turtledove credit. Without him, no one would care about Worlds of If. Case in point, anybody here remember Philip K. Dick's "The Man in the High Castle?" You know, the book where Featherston wins the Second Great War and takes place in British occupied New York? No, I thought not.

You REALLY Should Read American World: Dial O for Obama ...

Not Only does it Have a Very Compelling Protagonist who is a Descendant of Slave-Owners, But he himself Also has a Kenyan Father ...

Furthermore, Two of The US Presidents Mentioned in The Cold War Series are Texas Born, Although Ike Still does Wind up Spending his Formative Years in Kansas!

ooc: I've already stated that those books were an April Fool's Day joke by IGN.com (which they have a habit of doing). Turtledove has explicitly stated the 191verse won't be continued, so it stands to reason that his alternate self won't continue the series past the 1940s either.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled program.

IC: Sorry, I rarely read fanfiction.

Moving Right Along ...

What does Everyone ELSE Think ...

About The Proposed Continuation?

I thought I'd post the front covers and back cover notes for those of you who haven't read the books. To give you a flavour of them.

We;ll Start with 'How Few Remain'

Next is 'Western Front', the first book of 'The Great War' trilogy. I think the book is called 'European Front' in North America.

ht great war 1.PNG

Moving on to the 'Times of Trouble' series, which covers an interwar period that is just as turbulent as in OTL. The first book of the series is 'Men of Iron'.
