DBWI: The Truman Assination failed?

That's about the only way Torresola couldn't kill Truman. He had a fresh magazine and a clear line of sight. And he was the best shot in the fight, missing with only 1 shot and taking down three armed opponents.

Joe Downs was too badly wounded to shoot Torresola, even if he wasn't behind a closed door at that point. That leaves Leslie Coffelt, but he was dying. For him to stay conscious would be a miracle, for him to actually hit Torresola, let alone take him down before he put at least a couple shots into Truman would move TTL firmly into ASB territory. ;)

Does anyone think he could have taken on Dewey in '52 if he lived? Barkley certainly wasn't up to task which of course led to a strengthened Liberal Republican faction after they won in '52 which lasted all the way up until the conservative Reagan in '76*.

*Though, Reagan oversaw an economic slump which did manage to keep the moderates of the party afloat, but that's neither here or there.

OOC: If that's too much trying to mold the universe, decanonize everything past the winning against Dewey point.

OOC: not at all, That's the kind of thing I like to see in DBWI threads.

Well certainly the situation of race relations would have been altered. While Harry Truman (D-MO) certainly desegregated the armed services in 1948, it took until the 1986 death of Jesse Jackson, and the 1994 release from prison of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., that the country began seriously addressing race relations. Just remember that it was against the law for interracial couples to be married until 1988. While it might seem like ASB-fantasy, we might have certainly had a more peaceful 1960s and 1970s.

Another item is that President Alben Barkley's punitive "police action" of Puerto Rico in 1951 wouldn't have alienated Latin America to the degree that it did...
