The Mustang was switched to a FWD platform in 1989 despite major outcry from Mustang enthusiasts, while the existing model was renamed the "Mustang Classic". What would happen if Ford decided to not turn the Mustang into a FWD car?
We probably don’t get Lee Iacocca’s farewell gift, the game-changing, retroesque ‘92 Plymouth ‘Cuda. Without that car and Chevy’s retooled and souped-up Camaro that followed 2 years later, maybe Ford isn’t mired in 3rd place in the Pony Car Wars. The fact that when Ford finally admitted their mistake and brought back the rear-wheel drive Mustang V in ‘96, they did it with a Mazda-derived four-banger with an unreliable turbo compounded matters.
