DBWI: the Peking olympics started yesterday!

The Sicilians seem to be shoe-ins for the the Gentleman's Quartet: Shooting, Horseback Riding, Sword Fighting, and Ballroom Dancing.

I think the Mongolian Empire has a good chance of winning some golds this year, the Tsar seems to really want to stick it to the Moscuvites ever since the Russian Civil War.

I was a tad bit puzzled by the opening Parade Of Nations...the announcers dropped the "Empire" from Mongolia's name. broadcaster bias, or is the Tsar up to something?

I wouldn't be so assured about the Samoans.

From what I've seen thus far, it looks like their building has payed off, and the Samoans will likely have a serious challenger for once.

good. the last three Games, the Samoans might as well have been sleepwalking for all the resistance they've been getting since the Kyrgyz dropped out of the Games twenty(?) years ago.

EDIT: I really hope that there's a match between Vaai Alesana and Toyomoto Hideki.

agreed.

That would be a clash of the titans if the sport has ever seen one.

*waits patiently*

the Tajiks've been doing spectacularly well lately (eight years ago, they were in 5th place; four years ago, they won Bronze)...so maybe there's a chance.

The Tsar is always up to something Nukes, Economics, you name it but I don't see any purpose for changing his country's nickname. (Mongolia is still officially the Russian Empire you know)

Not if the Italians have anything to say about it.

USA will win gold in Motorized Jousting again!

USA! USA! USA!
No, we didn't. We got silver.

Luxembourg got gold.

I think they were just lucky.

EDIT: Ah! Bridge results:

1) Great Britain
2) China
3) USA
4) Luxembourg
5) Sicily
6) Provence
7) Mongolia
8) Denmark
9) Bharat
10) Hawai'i

Luxembourg's doing surprisingly well.

ㄋㄧㄏㄠ from Peking! How's everyone doing today?

I think the Chinese are probably going to be champions in the association football part of the game.

(though the Sandwich Islanders will probably win Womens Gymnastics this time)

I suspect the representatives from the Kingdom of Hawaii will make their presence felt in other sports. They have long dominated Mens Swimming since the days of Duke Kahanamoku and have won their fair share in Women's Swimming events.

The Californians should also place well. Its a good demonstration of how well funded the Empire of California's sports programs are.

BBC is reporting that Circassia has invaded Russia, or (depending on your politics) the breakaway state of Khanty-Mansi. So much for the Olympic Truce!

Oh no. There has always been talk of possible violence at the Olympics since the 1972 Genoa games and the killings of the Royal Judean competitors.:( Doge Agostino VIII was never the same man again.

Here's hoping the Ottoman Empire dosen't get involved. Lord knows how Mustafa V likes to screw with other people's politics.

Who'll win gold in Soapbox this time? Traditional winners such as Afghanistan or Scotland? Or maybe a contender such as the Papal States who won Silver in Rio de Janeiro 4 years ago?

I'm thinking the British actually have a chance here. They've won bronze for the last three Olympices, and the team looks a lot stronger than it has been.

Other than that, Afghanistan is probably the best bet.

I think that one of the Russian states might do well this time. Ingria and Yakutia have some decent athletes in their teams, although my hopes are in Muscovy. After what they have been going through recently I think they deserve something to feel proud over.

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland, Vinland and Man have filed a protest against the civilized version of Knattleikr to be played this Olympics!

Especially the banning of daggers and axes have aroused the Norse feelings complaining that no game having less than 5 deaths is a good game.

Icelandic champion Eigil Scullcarver is especially offended by the barriers of the field obstructing any players of dealing blows to abusive spectators!

Danish article on Knattleikr here (in Danish of course)

Yes there are a few Welsh that should get at least bronze but I have doubts they'll win gold.

OOC: I assume that by British you mean England and Wales.

I don't think so. Polynesia has that medal locked up pretty tight, though Scandinavia is slipping somewhat these recent years. I'm thinking the Republic of California has a decent chance of winning bronze.

OOC: One of the early posts mentioned British athletes coming from all over the empire.

Now, with an independent Scotland and a British Empire...

The Polynesians might have it locked up tight but the biathlon - sailing and Knattleikr i.e. - the Scandinavians reign surpreme even if the Maori is going to do their best, which is a lot to counter this superiority! :D
