DBWI: the new (female) Caliph is inaugurated

Yesterday morning marked a historic occasion as Fatimah bint-Obaidullah al-Rashid al-Filasteenee was selected to become the new Caliph. This makes her the first female Caliph to rule the Ummah in her own right since the days of Sitt al-Mulk in the early 11th century.

During her first press conference as Caliph at the Hagia Sophia she urged Muslims everywhere to come together and embrace their brethren in these trying times and to put their faith in the Ummah & Allah. She also touched on the growth of violence towards women in the Muslim world, believing this to be the result of corrupting un-Islamic influences like alcohol, American television programs, video-games and western music. Fatimah is scheduled to meet with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church next week followed by a meeting with the Pope in two weeks.

So what is everyone’s first impression of Fatimah? Do you think she will be better than the last Caliph? On the one hand, I find the selection of a woman as the head of the Ummah to be an incredibly progressive move. On the other hand, I’m turned off by the way she seemingly blames all of Muslim world’s problems on “un-Islamic influences”.

OOC.: I’ll leave it up to you to decide how the Caliphate remains to present day (no Kemal Atatürk maybe?) but I will say that the Caliph is a religious figure without control of the political government (though he/she can use the influence to support (or maybe resist?) government’s aims (think of the OTL relationship between Patriarch Kirill and Putin’s government)).

OOC: was your comment meant to be OOC? Anyway, I stipulated that a surviving office if the Caliph underwent changes in terms of its power. How? Possibly the Ottomans loose WW1 but wins the Turkish Civil War and/or Atatürk never comes to power?

I'd say a female Caliph would require a PoD quite a lot earlier than 1900.
OOC: Why? OTL there were a few female Caliphs (they certainly weren't common but at least one of them was said to rule on her own accord (I mention her in the OP)). The 20th century saw several female leaders and heads of state in Muslim countries. So... ???

The Caliph has sometimes been a religious figurehead without political power, most recently in 1922-23, so that part has some historical precedent. A more prolonged period was 1261-1513, when the Abbasids in Egypt were religious leaders only.

Many earlier Caliphs were puppet rulers, but in the above periods, the Caliphs' lack of political power was official.

It will require a post Muhammad POD (around 700AD). There's a lot anti-women(and surprisingly, anti-dog) cleric to be discredited... Bukhari and Muslim were the most prominent one... And no, I'm not a Muslim...:p Just happened to live in a Muslim country...;)

P/S: I think you should ask our resident Muslim here... If they had one...

OOC: Once again, I have to repeat that 1) there were Caliphas in the past and 2) in 20th and 21st century there were female leaders in Muslim-majority countries (and Afghanistan has a female warlord).

And the OP says that Fatimah is the first female Caliph in the modern age, not that it is a regular occurrence.

If I look at the listt of caliphs - there is NOT a single woman there... please back your claims...

Ahh saw you claim Sitt al Mulk, who was regent but not ruler....

Err... Which one?

Well, I had 1 question: Which branch of Islam? You can't count everyone in... For example, Wahabbism were very strict towards women and restrict their life... Almost to the point of humans rights abuse(as you see in Taliban era Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia)... Ahmadi and Shiite was outcast(no offence, thats from an ustazah whom taught me)... So your best bet was from Sunni(which was in majority), Hambali, or even Hanafi...

There never is, unless he counted Aisha, which was not...:)

He's right though, There's women leader and even generals in Muslim world...
