DBWI: The Little Mermaid considered a classic

As you all know, Disney made a movie in 1989 called the Little Mermaid. It was critically received lukewarmly and was a bomb. One of the main problems was that the blonde haired mermaid made Snow White, a 1930's character look good. look like various strong female characters like Sarah Connor and Rhonda the Immortal Waitress.* Ursula being voiced by Katey Segal of the sitcom Married With Children was problematic enough, as although she can act and do voices, she never seemed like a menacing enough villain. There also was a crab that was extremely offensive to Jamaicans**, and I wonder whether there any way to tone it down, Well, The Great Mouse Detective was the best Disney had to offer until 2010, when they made a hyper-successful 3D adaptation of the story of Yeh-Shen, a Chinese cinderella-esque folktale, who had become the first new Disney Princess since 1959. I do admit I did like that 1998 Don Bluth adaptation of 1001 nights, which had audiences crying when Aladdin's love interest was murdered by the evil sultan***. How would history look if the film was a blockbuster success and Disney rose from his malaise early????
*OTL Buffy the Vampire Slayer
**Sebastian if he were written nearly exactly like Jar Jar Binks.
***Picture a Jafar-esque character, but more competent, and as evil as Grand Moff Tarkin.
