The news was bleak in June of 1942. The Japanese have successfully invaded the Aleutians and drawn the American carriers away from Midway. Marines
destined for the South Pacific have been detoured to Alaska and put ashore on
Attu. In the Battle of Massacre Valley, the Marines suffer heavy casualties, and
have to be pulled off the island. A similar attempt to retake Kiska also fails.
The 14th Imperial Japanese Army then invades the Alaskan mainland and takes Fairbanks, and the territorial capital of Juneau. General Simon Bolivar
Buckner, Jr., the commander of American forces in Alaska, is taken prisoner and brought back to Japan. The American carriers are destroyed, along with
the cream of America's pilots, and the United States is reduced to scraping the
bottom of the barrel.
