DBWI: The Great Heathen Army is beaten by Alfred the Great

What would the world, and more specifically Bretland, look like if King Alfred defeated King Guthrum, preventing him from conquering Wessex. Maybe Alfred and his successors would drive the Danes from Bretland(what would the Anglo-Saxons call the region?). Would Mercia survive or would it be conquered by Danes from the East and Welsh from the West like iotl?

Wessex landgrab, followed by arrange marriage, and hopefully a dynastic union to eventually unite England through a more capable line of succession than OTL that is able to resist future Scandinavian and Norman invasions.

I think a Danish conquest of all of Bretland would be unavoidable or at least of all of modern Danelagen, a Wessex victory may give the Welsh time to prepare, the Alfred would only push the conquest out into the future. Also they would call Bretland for Saxland or Sexland, that seem pretty obvious. But the question is whether what would happens to modern West Danish and Normandsk, in OTL the Danish victory resulted in a lot of Danish settlers in southern Danelagen and many Brelandish Saxons sought service under Rollo against getting land in Normandland. Would the Normands have become such a powerful factor without the Bretlandish exiles. We could very well have seen Normandland collapse under pressure from the French kings following Rollo, and without a Normandsk proto-nationalism, which they used effective to make themselves distinctive from their Latin neighbours, would the Counts of Normandland and later kings have been able to keep French power out?

Someone is bound to unify the southern kingdoms. TTL it might be Wessex rather than a resurgent Northumbria with Viking claims and later union with Guinnedh.
A much more English Saxon country might result rather than the cosmopolitan Anglo-Dano-Norwelsh High Kingdom commonly called Bretland.

I think the issue would be that Wessex and Alfred wouldn't be able to do much beyond defend themselves and maybe if very lucky extend their realms to parts of Merrcia, but they wouldn't do much more without over extending their forces. It's unlikely that any of the petty kings of Bretland would be able to win alone and none of them would consent to working together. The had far more issues with each other than with the Danes afterall despite the raids and invasions if you can believe it. Most would rather be subservient nobles under the Danes than under one of the other kings.
