DBWI: The Communists won the Chinese Civil War

As we all know, the Nationalists won the Chinese Civil War and took control of China with the exception of a truncated People's Republic of China in Manchuria. But what if the Nationalists lost the Civil War and the Communists won? What would said hypothetical Communist China be like? How would the Cold War have been affected by such a Communist victory?

Surely it can only help the Soviets who gain a major Communist ally. Although I still don't think they can win the Cold War they could make it last well into this century

They'd probably have a legit communist ally in Asia as their main ally in Asia, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, was an "Islamic Socialist" regime.

Chiang Kai-Shek as a brutal dictator, even suspicion of communist sympathies was enough to get thrown in prison, if not execution, resulting in about 3-4 million dead. Mao was no better though, as his ghastly human rights record in Manchuria can attest to, such as his "Manchurian Cultural Revolution" that also killed millions and really scarred the normal Chinese government when they had to annex Manchuria in the late 1980s. I think the soviets would probably take over South Korea or at least beat back the South Korean invasion of North Korea that happened in OTL though.

Well, while he was a brutal dictator, he wasn't mismanaging his economy and starving large swathes of his population in the pursuit of some communist "utopia". If the Communists had won, the Federal Republic of India would probably be the world's largest economy instead of China (even though the RoC had to swallow up Manchuria).

True, Mao killed about 3-6 million of his own population in Manchuria by starving them to death, and is generally regarded as one of the cruelest men in history, I was pointing out that the other leader of China wasn't all roses either.

There is one of those things where it would probably be better to have a more specific POD.

The main one is whether you posit the Communists taking over ALL of China (even Taiwan and Hong Kong?) or just most of it, more than they had, while there is still a US supported non-Communist government based in the South. Presumably the Communists get Beijing in this scenario but do they still have Nanjing?

With a really different Chinese regime, one that is Communist, now you affect not just Korea, but Mongolia, Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, Vietnam, and Burma, but this depends on whether our "People's Republic of China", I think that is what they were going to call it, holds all the southern provinces.

Also without being beaten again -remember they also got beat pretty badly in the 1930s- by the nationalists, I suspect you would have had a saner Communist regime and someone different than Mao would have been in charge.

Presumably cooperation between the Nationalists and the US doesn't happen in this timeline or is less effective somehow, and that has butterflies. Does this extend to the war against Japan and are the Japanese stronger in China than in OTL in 1944?

So, how do you think would the Indian subcontinent have been affected by a communist China? Would the Federal Republic of India take China's economic role?
