DBWI: The Communists won the Chinese Civil War

Despite being the world's 10th largest economy and second most populous country, the Republic of China of today has little tp show for this. The country is riddled with corruption and poverty, with the highest percentage of people living below $1/day in the G20.

China as definitely fallen behind it's much more econonically, militarilly, and politically powerful neighbor, the United Republic of India, with nearly 2 billion people in it's territory, as well as the world's largest economy, and essentially the puppet-master of an independent Tibet

Militarily, China has more active soldiers than any other country, but this proved inadequate as half a million Chinese soldiers were beaten by 300,000 Indian soldiers in the failed Chinese annexation of Tibet; their failure to reclaim the People's Republic of Mamchuria from joint Russo-Japanese forces, and their embarrassing performance in the Korean and Vietnam wars

People celebrated when they pushed the Communists to Manchuria, but realized that it came with much of China's surviving industry. The average Chinese seems unable to believe that for centuries, China was the center of the world.

What would a Communist victory under Mao in China look like today? Would they become one of the stereotypical totalitarian states like the Union of Arab Socialist Republics? Or would they prosper as Manchuria did? Would this China even be able to change its fate?

You have to remember that Manchuria, in the years after the end of the Civil War, was very totalitarian, and, despite extensive Soviet investment, was actually one of the poorest countries in the world in the 50's. In fact, had the Soviets and the People's Republic of Japan hadn't contributed forces, the ROC would've reclaimed it. It was only after Mao was removed from power in 1960 that it moderated and became the economic powerhouse that it is today.

You made some vaild points, and I do think that this defeat is what allowed the Indian-American sponsored Republic of South Vietnam to defeat the Empire of Vietnam (North Vietnam) that was heavily invested supported by China. Japan also lost any significant power projection capabilities after their former ally, Korea, underwent a brutal Communist revolution that dragged in the USSR (secretly) and the PR of Japan.

China is essentially surrounded by enemies. From the Communist alliance in the North, Northeast, and West; to the Indian superpower in the Southwest; the Federation of Indochina and the Philippines to the south, one can only wonder how China made enemies of them all

It was rumored that the USSR, Korea, and Japan agreed to respect China's remaining territory and anti-Communist rhetoric in exchange for the Atlantic Treaty Organization and India respecting the territory and socialism of the Arab Socialist Union and the People's Republic of Scandinavia. Although no government has admitted to any of these agreements, it is widely believed that this is what stops a possible WW3
