I just got a book on the one hundred most important battles of all time, judged by their significance on history. Now, being a brilliant alt historian, I think the book is stupid, because obviously the oldest battles will have the most significance, but the explanations are still interesting. The book had the top three as:

1) The Liberation of Constantinople(1823)
Russia v. Ottomans, Russian Victory
Result: Collapse of the Ottoman Empire
Almost four centuries after Constantinople fell to the Ottomans, it was "Liberated" by Russian soldiers, which resulted in the massacre of thousands of ethnic turks. In the long term, this a considerably more powerful Russia which would be the scourge of European politics for years to come, which would only end with the start of the Great War in 1894, and as a result, had a profond effect on the world centuries after the battle.

2)Seige of Warsaw(1906)
European Alliance v. Greater Russian Empire, European Victory
The battle that finally ended the Great European War and destroyed the Russian Empire had a major effect on the world by ending a power which stretched from Germany to Alaska, and left a gap in the balance of powers which would cause further destabalization in the 20th Century.

3) Siege of Jefferson(1981)
United States of America v. Hegemony of China, American Victory
The high water mark of the Chinese invasion, the Battle of Jefferson was the turning point in which the Americans repeled the Chinese invaders and chartered the corse for the Peace of New Dehli(1983), which would end the Trans-Continental War. The Americans, despite being outnumbered 10 to 1 after a tactical withdraw, defended the pass until Winter.

OOC: All the battles don't ahve to be in the same universe. If I put this in the wrong forum, please move!
