Today the NATO leaders gather in Edinburgh to celebrate the North Atlantic Alliance. The King of Scandinavia, the Lord Protector of England, the Stadtholder of the United Provinces and the Duke of Brittany will all visit the court of the Scottish queen to celebrate North Atlantic cooperation. Isn't this nice!

Nice for the kings and queens but what about the starving farmers that have to pay for it?
Yes, at the Spring Palace in Copenhagen last May, they spent 6 million gold krona just on the banquet! And they haven't even emancipated the serfs!

Well, I think that any organization that can get the elected successor to the first Lord Protector, Oliver the Great, to meet with and be nice to hereditary monarchs is worth the cost!

Interesting point, that.

I notice that the Kingdom of New England still hasn't been granted better than 'Observer' status, despite having all the qualifications for membership set out in the North Atlantic Treaty. I wonder if that was the hidden cost of getting the Commonwealth of England and Wales on board.

The fact that the so-called Kingdom of New England is even an Observer is a demonstration of the lengths the CEW is willing to go in order to maintain a united front against the Hapsburgs' Catholic League. Allowing the self-proclaimed King of New England to send a representative, I mean really. The other monarchs won't do more than call him "cousin". But I know that realpolitik demands that the CEW maintain a balance of power in North America. Just wish we had another option besides that thug.

'Thug' is rather extreme, and as he legitimately inherited the throne, he's hardly 'self-proclaimed' (though I'll concede that Charles I of New England was certainly self-proclaimed, unless buying off the colonists counts as legitimacy - even then, he was pre-Commonwealth English royalty).

OOC: When is this supposed to be set, anyway?

I know that "CEW" is the common abbreviation for the Commonwealth, but shouldn't we recognize the important contributions that Ireland has made to the success of the Commonwealth since the time of Oliver the Great? I think the term "The United Commonwealth of England, Wales and Ireland" or "UC" should be used more often.
I also think that the Commonwealth of Virginia should be invited to NATO meetings. Relations between the English speaking nations of North America are definitely improving and this fact should be recognized.

(OOC Question: How did the Cromwellian Commonwealth lose Scotland?)
