DBWI: The 1989 protests in the Eastern bloc weren't attacked?

I know, it seem unrealistic to assume, but what if the street protests that were enveloping the Warsaw Pact in 1989 weren't shot at?

Well somebody will come up with something totally ASB like the USSR coming apart. As we know now Gorbechev's reforms really started to take. When the KGB tried that coup in 94 the Red Army crushed them. Most of the incidents in 1989 were actually perpetrated by over vealous elements of the state security apparatus in the satellite countries. The Stasi in the GDR were the worst of the lot. Things came to the head in 1990 when Moscow order the Red Army in the GDR to remove Hoenecker from power and defang the Stasi. As we know the loosening of societal controls in the Warsaw Pact countries have led them to a situation where today they are closer to the Social Relpubics of Western Europe than anyone could have imagined in 1980. Today the Warsaw Pact is closer to Common Market than NATO
