One hugh step toward this switch could have occured during the 19-teens. Remember that it was during that decade when, due to the significant labor & financial difficulties plaguing the west coast (California0 film industry, film makers in San Antonio and later in Dallas began turning Texas into the "movie capital of the world". Prior to their troubles and even briefly afterwards it looked as though California was going to become the locus of the industry. What if the west coast ascendancy had continued? If the glitz, glamor, greed, filth and self-absorption which pervades and characterises the modern entertainment industry were in California rarther than Texas, the political compass of these states could very well be reversed.
