The Tattoo Assassins franchise by Data East was an interesting mid-1990s video game trilogy that despite many problems during development of the first game and being derided by some critics upon release as at best a mediocre Mortal Kombat clone, grew from the original game (known in popular culture for leaving many a kid in the mid-90s expecting Mortal Kombat on Christmas day bitterly disappointed) to the much improved final two Tattoo Assassin games of the late-90s that while still derivative of Mortal Kombat also incorporated a bizarre mix of competitive gameplay aspects akin to Street Fighter III and typical 90s style humor almost reminiscent of Duke Nukem (albeit with a more Gronenberg inspired twist).
Though a fairly successful film was made based on the 2nd game, no new Tattoo Assassins games have been made since 1999.
What impact if any would Tattoo Assassins have on the video game industry had it not been released?
