DBWI Taiwan does not get nukes

During the 1970s the government of Taiwan decided to start a nuclear program because of their fears of the mainland. Their first successful nuclear test was in 1976. Since then the country has expanded their nuclear weapons stockpile and relations between them and mainland china are tense.

But what would the world look like if Taiwan didn't have nukes?

Maybe mainland China wouldn't be such a mess. The growing cross-strait tension helped the Gang of Four triumph over the moderates, who favored rapprochement with the ROC.

OOC: How does Taiwan develop a nuclear weapons program without the PRC invading? They would never stand for a nuclear Taiwan.

OCC China's navy during the 60s and 70s was bad, Taiwan had a nuclear weapons program in the OTL but it was nipped in the bud by america and other western powers. If america stayed out of the way theres a good solid chance Taiwan would have nukes.

OCC remember that the mainland Chinese had nukes way before any of this potential Taiwanese nuclear latency. If it actually did make one the PRC would have pressured the US into forcing its hand, using various means. Remember that after 1972 the US and China were basically allies against the greater threat, the USSR.

OCC this isnt nessarly the case in this alternate time line. OCC

OOC there literally is no POD mentioned. I had to guess one that minimised the differences from OTL, which was where with a POD in the 1970s the Americans and Chinese for some reason sit back until the Taiwanese come up with a nuke.

Weren't there some rumors that Taiwan had gotten some nukes (I've heard up to 50) from a combination of Britain and South Africa?

Well the Sino-Soviet nuclear standoff crisis of 1987 certainly wouldn't have taken place. Consider that the standoff took place mainly because of Hua Guofeng's panic over the rise of reformer Mikhail Gorbachev. The summit between American President Reagan and Gorbachev was too much for the paranoia of the ruling clique....

And from that standoff, Gorbachev got kick out of power by hard-liners, and causes the second Russian civil war, which ending with a large nuclear bomb going off in Moscow. We still don't know who did it.
