DBWI: Surviving Roman and Chinese Empires

As you know, both the Roman and Chinese Empire had been vast civilizations that spanned large parts of the known world. But by the end of the 400s (in Rome) and the Han era (in China), both empires had largely disintegrated and have not been unified since (though some attempts were made at unification (most recently in the 20th century) though these have gone nowhere.

My question is what would it take to keep one or both empires unified into the present-day.

I think I remember seeing a TL once where the Eastern half of Roman Empire managed to survive for another thousand years or something. The PoD was in the 3rd Century (by Christian counting) though, not sure if that's too early for you or not. And China was reunited briefly after the fall of Han,* but fell apart shortly after; maybe this last attempt at unity sticks?

Considering that Allemagne, a Germano-Roman state, has survived in some form from 469 to the present, it's not impossible that the Roman state could have. They would need to rebuild Italy however instead of relying on the rebellious eastern provinces, which were vulnerable to the Second Parthian Empire.

Yes, but they've only ruled northern Gaul and western Germany and never bothered to unify the empire after the 800s, when they faced the Normans (which later settled in Normandy*, a region with its own distinct Oïl language and identity that's still present today)

The conditions in place were atrocious. The Three Kingdom war had drained China too much. There's no way they could have held together. You'd need a dynasty to, at the bare minimum, to have a few decade of peace, and hold onto more of China, likely the south. Hmm... Was there any way a dynasty based in the south could have reconquered China?

If nothing else, you could have it be like that one TL (RoTK/SGYY) where Chinese culture is stronger in the north, and as a result, the Sinicized north reconquers the south and declares another Empire. Of course, would they still be Chinese, or would it be like the Avar "Roman Empire" that held northern Italy and claimed to be a Roman Empire, despite being more Avar than Roman?
