I read an alternate history novel were Suleiman I failed to take Vienna and the Ottoman state was eventually weakened and lost their status of great power by the early 18th century.I found it very palusible, don't forget that Suleiman I managed to capture Vienna only beacuse Charles V had that nasty heart attack en route to lift the siege with his army which gave Suleiman I the time he needed to destroy the Austrian garrison and dig that tunnel into the hearth of the city.I wonder how much would have changed by such a defeat.Maybe, like in the novel,a defeat in Vienna means that Islam would never become the dominant religion in eastern and central Europe? Maybe Poland would have stayed a major player in European politics instead of being splitted between Russia, the Ottoman Empire and Brandenburg? Maybe the Holy Roman Empire would have survived well into the 17th century? And what would have happened in the Iberian peninsula? I imagine that without the constant bombing of Catalonian and Andalusian city Spain might have been able to keep the territories they've conquered in the Americas.
