DBWI: Stalinist Soviet Union

The Socialist Republic of Italy was little more then a bunch of corrupt politicians who were willing to sell anything to anybody to keep themselves in charge and its teetering economy afloat. They supported New Moscow merely for the cash it got from NeoUSSR's tourist sex trade with its government supported brothels.

But hey, look at how the Socialist Republic of Italy managed to survive, compared with the Federal Republic of Italy. IIRC the Federal Republic of Italy collapsed in the Eighties due to heavy corruption (remember the Tangentopoli?) and regional infighting. Not to mention that the Federal Republic of Italy was always in a deficit. IMO, the Federal Republic was MORE corrupt than the Socialist Republic. I'm surprised, actually, that the Socialist Republic managed to survive to the present day, especially since the Socialist Republic moderated over time and actually TRIED to get rid of corruption.

Obviously, greater and more widespread industrialization could have been of benefit to the USSR. As a man from a peripheral republic, surely Soso would have understood this.

As for more current events, would the dictatorships of ultra-nationalist Generals Vladimir Zhirinovsky and Vladimir Putin have come to power in 1994? Just consider how quicly the Russian people seemed to follow the "Reunification Campaign" under the banner of the Russian National Unity Party from 1994-2004. From Belgorod to Vladivostok, the Pamyat groups are becoming louder and more popular. Too many Russians have bought into the "New World Order" conspiracy since 1990 that America and Europe caused the collapse of Russia. The fact that they have used the Internet to organize is a frightening thought....

how would that work?

From what Russian author and former U.S. national security advisor (1985-1992) Mikhail Gorbachev once wrote that a Coalition government based in Moscow posited the idea of a "cult of the personality" in 1991, citing the long history of authoritarian leaders who led the region from Peter the Great to Catherine the Great. From what the Washington Post has written, General Zhirinovsky apparently has been taking this idea of a cult to heart, with his rallies in Moscow....
