DBWI: Stalin Takes Power

What if Josef Stalin rather than Leon Trotsky had taken over the USSR after Lenin's death. Could he have focused on peacefully developing the USSR into a socialist state rather than launch massive wars of expansion? Would socialism be more popular to-day without Trotsky's Napoleonism?

Is this how a DBWI works?

Wars of expansion? What the hell? How dare you tarnish Comrade Trotsky's name with such blasphemous accusations!

I can't see Stalin "taking over" the USSR the way Trotsky did -- he just doesn't seem to have the ideological mind to be the power behind a triumvarite the way Leon was, though I can see him using the General Secretary position to offer himself as the unifying face of the party the way Ivan Smirnov was. If that's the case, he could actually take over the USSR the way Smirnov did when he finally exiled Trotsky himself (though that begs the question of who Stalin's Trotsky would be -- Molotov maybe?).

OOC: This gives an idea what I'm talking about
