DBWI: Spanish East Indies taken over by another power?

What if the Spanish East Indies were taken over by another country either during or after the Spanish-American War?

What butterflies would this create? I can see this having effects on the Pacific War...with no giant area of neutral islands, perhaps more naval combat takes place in this area?

Of course, this depends on who takes the islands. The Americans seem most likely, if they want the rest of the Pacific islands in addition to Guam and the Philippines. Would Spain be willing to sell the islands to another nation? They didn't in OTL...what would have to change for this to happen?

I think you misunderstand a DBWI..

What constitutes the Spanish East Indies? To the best of my knowledge, it was the Philippines, which the yanks did take over.

I do think it's interesting to think what other nations could do it. I could definately see an eventual Japanese/Spanish War over them, seeing as Japan eventually became very expansionist.

I dunno about America swallowing them all up, mind you. France would probably be bothered by the upset in the "balance of power", and Portugal had always had their eyes on the archipelago since re-independence. If Spain had to lose them all, I'd wager that they'd be divided amongst several powers.

ooc: I think he is asking what is included i the Spanish East Indies, Is is the Philippines? Philippines plus Dutch East Indies? Just the Dutch East Indies? Part of the Dutch East Indies?

I think Japan, the US, or Germany would be most likely to take them. All three countries would be the countries in the area that would want to expand their territory and power the most.

I'd say an easier Battle near Manila Bay. The sailors themselves fought pretty amazingly under the cover of the shore guns. I don't know why Dewey tried to close with them there. Maybe he felt some pressure from the Hearst Bombast Machine or something. Anyhow, it set the tone for the rest of the war and showed the Spanish were willing to make us pay in blood. If their navy doesn't even hurt the Americans much there, I bet Aguinaldo will be shipped to Manila months ahead of time. Who knows what might have happened if the US had moved more quickly at the beginning.

So the Spanish East Indies taken over by another power? Who could that power be? Probably not the Dutch, they were too busy in North-America, until they lost the American revolution and their colony became independent. I don't think the English are a good choice, they had too much internal problems between catholics and protestant after the Spanish occupied them for 50 years. The French might be able to do it, but they already controlled most of India. Including (most of) the Spanish East Indies might be overstretching their power. Last of all, I think Denmark, Porugal and Sweden are too small. They did have large colonies in south America and Africa, but I think the East-Indies will be a lot harder to control (or Spain a too large power to beat). Maybe a couple of countries could band together to defeat Spain and divide the East-Indies?

I am surprised no body has suggested the Chinese. Their fleet has grown quite impressively. I believe they are even working on the building of submarines.

If the US hadn't taken Spanish Melanesia,[to use it's modern name] perphaps Germany would have bought them.
This would lead to Japan attacking and taking them during the GW.
This would mean more funding for the IJN, and a better chance of Japan holding Hainin Island during the Franco/Japanese war of 1934

Japan can turn the philippines into a protectorate if the americans did have the spanish-american war or gets involved more in the revolution because japan helped the philippine revolution, just get japan get more involved in the philippine revolution before the US-SPAIN war.

I don't think you should focus on Japan so much. Sure they are the other great power in the region, but the Spanish and Japanese relations have always been good. Without Spain Japan wouldn't have been a christian country.
