DBWI:Soviet moonbase established

Yesterday, the Premier of the USSR announced the completion of the Slava moonbase, which was celebrated with a parade in Red Square. By all accounts, the project has been a success. Seeing as lately the Soviet Union has made leaps and bounds ahead of the US in terms of space technology, and looks fit to displace it as the top superpower imminently, what do you think of this development?

Im actually amazed,I mean after Von Brauns death I thought the CCCP space program would dwindle, hes obviously left an astounding legacy despite NATO claims of him being a war criminal.

So what? They finally get a base on the moon (half a decade after the U.S.) and this time it can hold 12 people instead of our six? We could have built a more extensive complex than Liberty base, but we've realized that the it was just a huge waste of money. Sure now the soviets say their going to mars and the Jovian moons, but what good is that gonna due them. The nuclear blast from the spacecraft (ooc: Orion like) will make Siberia even more uninhabitable. The U.S. was still the first in space, and a first to have a permanent moon presence, so we should just let the commies spend themselves to death.

OOC: DoktorSespot: What you said makes no sense in the context of the second post. This is happening in the late 20th century where I presume the Soviets were swifter after WWII and captured scientists before they could surrender to the West.

ooc: I disagree. Sure, Soviet Von Braun means no-operation paperclip, but that doesn't preclude any success of the U.S. space program. In OTL, the soviets had a successful program with much less german expertise, so I don't think its entirely unreasonalbe that the U.S. could have launched the first satellite into space. Finally, this could be in the early 2000's, (more succesful soviets would meen they wouldnt collapse.) With Von Braun leading a more capable soviet space program, there would be more intense and longer copetition, which would encourage the U.S. to put forth alot of effort into it as well. Having Von Braun doesn't mean you have a monopoly on the space game, and while it might give the soviets a more capable program thean the americans (which I never denied,) it doesn't mean they control space.
