DBWI Solun a Greek city

Solun was one of those places in the Ottoman Empire that had a large Greek population, and in fact used to be known by its Greek name, Salonika. Greece even held the city for a few years at the beginning of the twentieth century. How would the city and the Balkans have developed if it had remained Greek?

The Jewish population would probably be lower or slowly Hellenised. There's always been a strong Jewish presence in Solun but having it run by a state with an exclusively Greek and Orthodox identity would put a lot of pressure on it. Which I guess would give some order to it, but I do feel a huge amount of its culture and history would be lost in the transition.

I went to Solun recently to spend Passover with my family (they moved from the Pale, for obvious reasons) and was bowled over by the sheer mix of peoples. Going down the street you'd hear Ladino, Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian, Yiddish and Albanian.
