DBWI: Should Turkey join the EU?

The Turkish government has expressed interest for quite a while now, but untill recently, its always been considered too far outside of Western Europe.

The main problem is the Soviets, or so conventional wisdom states. Coexistance has been pretty stable since the end of the troubles in the late 80s, but you could argue that that is because the East/West border is so absolutely defined, and that if we include the traditionally neutral Turkey into the Western alliance that is the EU, we inevitably risk upsetting that balance, no matter how warm our current relations with Moscow are.

But on the other hand, Turkey's democratically elected government wants to join, and Turkey is the fastest growing economy in Europe, (yes yes yes, if you use a liberal definition of 'Europe').

So what do people think?

It'll make Greece less of a silly stand out for sure.
But its a bit odd to think that of all that region the two countries we have are Greece and Turkey.
And if Turkey joins maybe Cyprus will decide to follow Malta and join too?

The Mediterranean Plan, you mean? I know southern expansion, (into the Eastern Mediterranean islands, or even into North Africa and the Levant), has a number of proponents in France and Italy, but it usually doesn't fly very well in our latitudes.

As a American, i fully support a strong EU. That way we share the military load. Yes, i still worry about the Red menace....:p. Besides, this will only help Turkey, right? Although i think any further attempts into the Levant is a bad idea...
