DBWI: Roger Moore stays on as James Bond for "For Your Eyes Only"

What if, instead of Timothy Dalton being cast as James Bond in "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981, they decided to stick with Roger Moore? Would it have been as much of a success? What would the future of the Bond series be after that?

(OOC: This nearly happened for real.)

It probably would have been a success. Roger Moore was well liked by the public. Trouble is that the producers would still need to find a new Bond as Roger Moore was tired of doing the role and felt that it was a job for a younger man. Trouble was Timothy Dalton was too old for the role and that is why he just didn't last.

But he'd have to look increasingly ridiculous acting as James Bond as he got older and older, wouldn't he?

Eh? He was only 35 when he played Bond for the first time in "For Your Eyes Only". He quit after four films because he was sick of the role, not because he was too old (even then he was only 41, which is four years younger than when Roger Moore first played the role).

So did EON films, apparently, but Pierce Brosnan was never available so they hired Lewis Collins instead after Dalton quit.

He was all set, but CBS reactiviated his contract, and the show was on for three more years.

(OOC: OTL, CBS reactivited his contract, and it was only on one more year. They did this to him when they found out that he was up for Bond, as they thought it would revialize the series.)

Perhaps Mr Dalton was younger but he actually said that he felt that he was too old fro the role and the producers also felt that the audience never really liked him as James Bond.
