DBWI: RIP President Thatcher

I suppose we all saw it coming but the death of former President Thatcher (1981-89) is still a sad moment. She was after all the first female President and along with British PM Reagan a central figure to the 80's.

I remember reading once that she and Reagan had joked that if her grandparents hadn't moved to the US and if Reagan's had (I guess in both cases it was a close call) they might have reversed roles.

I am not sure that would have worked as well. Reagan being an Irishman serving as British PM helped to heal the bad blood over the failure of the Riish Free State and Thatcher really helped break the glass ceiling here in the USNA.

But still a big loss.

I say good riddance!

Street parties in LA, San Fran, DC, and other cities tonight. Of course there will be none near me because this is Fresno, the right-wing asshole of California.

Her decision to push for the nationalization of so much of domestic oil production following the La Nouvelle-Orléans oil spill in the Gulf in '85, in the name of safety of course, will probably be remembered as one of the most divisive environmental policies in modern American history.

EDIT: Ahem... Being sarcastic of course

OOC: alas. If only I had posted two seconds sooner. :D

And by street parties, you mean near rioting in San Fran, LA and New York, and rioting elsewhere. In Southeast DC, fires and looting have already been started, and there are already reports of sporadic violence. And what little I heard from Baltimore is pretty bad too (think the riots under her Democratic successor Nader.)

Sure, the last decrepit remains of industry in the Midwest might also be happy, but the nationalization of the few state-owned industries was nothing compared to the ramp-up War on Drugs and Crime, only ended by our current moderate President Bill Clinton.

My opinion is mixed- the whole crime fiasco balanced against the excellent reforms of welfare and the smashing of the public unions (as opposed to the more-intact private unions).

OOC: At least Bill Clinton is President now.
