DBWI Richard Nixon becomes President

He probably came closer than any other politician without actually reaching the office. The POD could either be Eisenhower dies of a heart attack in 1955, he wins in 1960, he wins in 1968, or he gets the Republican nomination again in 1976 in which case he was likely to win the general election. All of the latter three were very close.

Does it really make a difference when he becomes President and what would a Nixon administration have been like?

Him, winning in 1968? That's preposterous! The peace talks in Vietnam secured Humphrey more than 300 E.V.'s. Unless you're going down the road of "he sabotages the negotiations" or something of that sort...

In the case that he does win in 1960 or 1976, I could see it as being a not extremely successful Administration (not as successful as the Percy admin., anyway). He would not win re-election.

If Wallace hadn't run, I can see Nixon winning a landslide approaching 400 EV, actually. And even with Wallace running, Nixon was within three points of The Hube.

I think Nixon would pour money into a Vietnam War expanded across Indochina (OOC: there was a bit of that IOTL - his bombing campaign in Cambodia), and through executive order would mercilessly destroy the Great Society. As such, the high inflation of the 60s would continue rather than coming down due to the end of Vietnam in 1970. Unlike Humphrey, Nixon would not be a success.

I'd say some form of the Comprehensive Healthcare Act (OOC: Canada-style healthcare - Nixon proposed it IOTL and would have gotten through if not for Watergate) is inevitable.

It came to hurt Humphrey real big when South Vietnam collapse in itself and North just waltz right in. With Nixon, things could have been different. And you have the failure of China by Humphrey.

Nixon on the homefront? Not so great, yes, but overseas, he would have been a master at that.
