Ronald Reagan served as President of the United States from 1977-1985 as a Democrat. Reagan was a lifelong New Dealer who had served as President of the Screen Actors Guild before entering politics. He lost his first race for the House in 1952, but he came back in 1953 when he was elected as Mayor of Los Angeles and later became a longtime Senator from California. Americans remember Reagan as a Democratic icon, but it is possible that Reagan could have become a Republican? If so, how could Reagan have been elected President as a member of the GOP?

When he was younger, Reagan even toyed with various communist and socialist ideas, and, as rumour has it, even expressed such opinions occasionally later in life.
I just cannot see a way for him to join the GOP, such move would have been total turn of character for him.

There's a video of him floating around on YouTube advocating for employee ownership. I would never have voted for him if given the opportunity, but President Reagan was a very well spoken person.
In any case, I believe if the Democrats in Congress had let McCarthy really expose the Communist plot in the Truman Administration, he would have flipped. Unfortunately, they never were able to get Whittaker Chambers to testify, the damned pinkos. President Reagan came from good stock, I think he would have seen the light.

There's a reason McCarthy was the only President to be successfully impeached and convicted by Congress. His Veep, ole Dick Nixon, ended up returning it only a few days after, anyways.
But remember that Nixon's order was never enforced. He ended up losing in a landslide to JFK in 1960. Senator Reagan helped Kennedy carry California, Nixon's home state.
