DBWI: Republican Greece

The 1974 Greek republic referendum failed when 69.18% of the population voted in favour of keeping the monarchy. How would Greece look like if it had become a republic?

That referendum was a sham orchestrated by the military to justify keeping their pliable figurehead the king in power. Greece has been a totalitarian dictatorship with a façade of being a constitutional monarchy since the 60s.

It's also a place where crooks from neighboring countries, like that ex Mayor of Istanbul, Erdogan, and former Israeli Foreign Minister Netanyahu go to hide after their countrymen tire of their shenanigans.

I'm wondering if Greece would be better off as a republic than as a monarchy since you would not have as many problems as what it has now. OTOH one would need to reconcile the unrealistic expectations of the past with the need in the present to forge a new Greek national identity. I agree that the referendum was rigged, though it should be pointed out that even with Papaðopoulos' limited metapolitefsi the republican option would have also meant the continuation of the dictatorship - in this case forging a new de facto monarchy with Papaðopoulos in the role. So Greece would need a republican model that breaks completely with the patterns of the past. But how?

Greece is known to be funding Kurdish rebels, Christian militia groups in Lebanon, and the south Sudan resistance alliance. They’ve also made violent threats to the Turkish government if they keep demolishing the Orthodox Church is in Istanbul. They claim that the Turkish government is trying to drive out orthodox Christians so they could institute sharia law.

Well, no it will have changed nothing the victory of the Republican; it was a bone throw to the last political remnant of the pre-coup days and frankly it was more a way to show the nation that they still existed than a real attempt to change the goverment.
Even in case of victory they will have changed their royal puppet with a president for life puppet and Greece still remainend the pariah state that's now.

Greece only maintains a positive diplomatic Contacts with Russia because they’re both orthodox Christians and the US hates them, Armenia because both the Armenians and Greeks hate the Turkish for numerous reasons.

Greece would be a Military ruled failed state. The monarchy is, whether you like monarchies or not, what kept Greece stable and within the West (being the wealthiest Eastern European State). A Republican Greece would be nothing more than a Junta which is going to force a war with Turkey and or Albania which nobody wants.

Greece is only kept in NATO because if they were kicked out numerous defectors from their have said that they will give basic rights to the Russians. And Their not a functioning State. That could be seen in how they blame everything on Turkish sabotage. They have publicly stated that they do not recognize the validity of the Turkish state. Papadopulos has written numerous pieces of propaganda screaming that turkey is a Islamic dictatorship that is planning to enslave the Greeks again.

A republican Greece would probably have managed to find a more peaceful solution to the Cyprus situation instead of keeping the war going there, you'd see a lot fewer Cypriot refugees in Greece, but also in countries like Britain, Italy and even northern Europe.

Cyprus is currently a armed camp between the Turkish army and Greek sponsored groups. It’s actually been the most peaceful year on Cypress since the conflict started, only 50 people have died.
