DBWI: Republican Europe

Europe2.png

Right now Europe is home to 22 Monarchies, some were restored after WW2 and others after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Could Europe become more republicans with most of them disappearing?

For Italy (after WWII) and Portugal (post Carnation Revolution) just made the monarchy option lose the respective referendum, their victory was very thin; for Jugoslavia and Greece the communist need to be the winner in their respective civil wars

Gonna have to disagree on that point about Portugal. Salazar had already restored the monarchy by the 50s - all the referendum did was confirm the status of the king (who was widely popular for his role in the transition to democracy)
OOC: Monarchism was dead in Portugal by the Carnation Revolution (which was lead almost entirely by far-leftists hostile to the monarchy). Salazar however did consider restoring the monarchy in the 50s, which is the most plausible POD.

And with how Russia, the FRICKIN POST-SOVIET RUSSIA, choose to restore the last Romanov Claimants on the Throne as check-and-balance against potential Authoritarian Takeover, the popularity of Monarchism is arguably at the highest peak in 1990s.

...

Without all those Monarchs, some countries might risk being taken over by strongmen/political extremism.

Well, I have to admit having a professional diplomatic corps trained from birth is probably very useful and that is how a friend of mine from GB described the monarchy(True story). Somehow you would have to make them less useful for that.

Russia actually doesn’t have a king it is kind of like hungry after World War I in that there is a empty throne because no one has been able to determine who has the best claim.

It’s a lot easier than it sounds.

Wilhelm II criticized Germany’s inability to defeat Russia in 1942 publicly and also said he doesn’t really get how they can beat France but fail against Russia. He kept talking about it to visitors and in 1943 he took it too far when he said that exterminating people is going too far. Hitler decides that he can’t ignore this anymore and with his hatred for the Kaiser, he had the old man killed. This turned the Hohenzollern from being divided on Hitler to adamantly against him, with the eventually King of Germany joining the German resistance movement.

Given that Wilhelm damn near died in 1941 from a pulmonary embolism and was expected to die there, just have him not pull through or at least not make the full recover to accomplish this.

It was only at that point that Hitler and the Nazi leadership starting killing Habsburgs and let their general anti-Monarchism sentiment take over. Like (brutally) killing the King of Italy and his son with assassins when Italy switched sides, or how he vindictively ordered the execution of the Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Belgium, and Luxembourg royal families when Germany was getting pushed out of those countries in 1944.

He turned Monarchs into Anti-Nazi symbols and Martyrs who had so much Allied propaganda behind them. I really think that if Wilhelm had died a few years earlier none of this would have happened.

Nazis started killing Monarchs and Royal Families is arguably the one moment when they screwed up in all sense.

Japan actually quit the war and somehow managed to make Peace with European colonial powers in the process. The very fact that Japan basically get away without any kind of repercussions from WW2 with Manchuria, Korea, Formosa, and Most of Their Pacific Possessions intact (those who arent given back to europe) definitely pissed off the Americans to no end, even until today.

Hell, blame British for actually betraying China and carved Dominion of Canton while ensuring China will never be United forever with their support of Tibet and Turkestan independence.

I swear, looking at a map of East Asia is like looking into the past.

French Indochina, Dutch East Indies, Kingdom of Serawak, British Malaya, British Canton, and the wasteland once called "India".

British Quitting India by setting Tube Alloy Bombs to kill "ungrateful bastards", causing him to be counted as the worst mass murderer in human history, and deliberately set the subcontinent to fall into permanent chaos are something that caused Churchill to be more hated than Hitler in America. But it arguably works in deterring any sort of Independence aspirations from other colonies.
I don't think Canton is gonna last much longer. Things are getting tense these days.

Yeah, the protests in Hong Kong and Canton, in favor of a referendum to join the ROC has been taking all the front-page news.

The same protests happened in Manchukuo too...

They should host an election in Hungary for the monarchy since they were run by the Austrian Habsburgs up until after WW1. Although I hear that Viktor Orban would probably win in a huge landslide and continue his rule of Hungary.

Even still, in a post-war world without Wilhelm's resistance, the Monarchy still represents a Germany that was unified, stable, and secure. I doubt that the people would reject the 1949 referendum, even with Wilhelm's early death.

Monarchies also represent a cultural center for Europe. Basically something governments nor soceities can do. It's something that led to the downfall of most of the Second World and something Americans have been trying to figure out how to approach. And good grief poor India. About the only stable region there is Khalistan (what was meant to be Pakinstan I think) and that's cause the Sikhs came to dominate the area after the Muslim migrations happened, msot heading to the US and Canada. Khalistan does try to maintian order with dignity and grace. US certainly likes them alot to invest and protect them.

The USA is goddamn pissed toward a large chunk of Europe. The only monarchies they keep good respect to are the Scandinavian ones and the micronations... and the Dutch too I think. China is pretty much on very good terms with the USA and plans are made for Canton to rejoin. Beyond that, the Japanese Empire did not last long because of logistics, which is why Korea is basically the Switzerland of the East now. Philippines had to be rebuilt by Mexico with USA focusing so much on China. Does mean Mexico has done very well.

Canada and Belize have pretty managed to remain on good terms with the USA through sheer goddamn miracles though little surprise that Canada has been trying to more be distinct from Britain. Mainly through the promotion of indigenous traditions.

Africa meanwhile is... well not that bad actually. The monarchies did force people to treat the African dominions better though Egypt is pretty much free and they along with Liberia, Free South Africa, The Abyssinian Empire and Morocco are the only true free African nations and on close relations with the US.

Honestly the Anglo-American tensions are drastically overplayed. We're not stupid yomens, we realize pissing off the biggest empire ever is a bad idea by some trade geography. We're only tense because Britain's got military exercises on the Canada border and has turned the Caribbean into a massive hotbed for naval exercises. They left NATO twenty years ago to get in bed with the Tsardom, and King William has managed to get a strong power base since the Deserting Parliament left their duties in protest when India finally managed to leave in 2007.

At the same time, he's still bound in by a lot, and most think the exercises are to stage an intervention in the Bengali Civil War.
