I just finished reading an alternate history book by Harry Turtledove ironically titled
Peace in Our Time in which most of Europe’s monarchies were abolished in the aftermath of the two World Wars (both lost by Germany) and replaced by Republics.
In this alternate world, the only remaining monarchies in Europe are:
- Spain
- United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland [1]
- Monaco
- The Netherlands
- Belgium
- Luxembourg
- Liechtenstein
- Denmark
- Norway
- Sweden
This book also goes on to describe the following
- The Tsar of Russia is overthrown and after a civil war, the Communists take over and abolish all political parties. Russia changes its name to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and over the next twenty years annex Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Moldavia, Armenia, and Georgia [2]. They are de facto absorbed into the USSR and do not become independent again until the USSR is abolished in 1991.
- The following countries would fall to the Communists after World War II and end up as de facto protectorates of the USSR: East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia [3], Yugoslavia [4], Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary. Communist rule ends in those countries by 1989-1990.
- Nearly all the European countries adopt a common currency called the euro. Only the United Kingdom and Switzerland retain their old currencies, the pound sterling and Swiss Franc.
- All land in sub-Saharan Africa held by the British, French, Belgians, Portuguese, and Germans become independent. Most are led by Communists and corrupt military dictators.
- In the late 1940s, a Nationalist Party comes to power in South Africa and codifies the racial separation that had been already been in existence (apartheid). They also leave the British Commonwealth and deny the majority black population and other non-whites the vote. The Nationalists rule South Africa until 1993 when apartheid is abolished and South Africans elect their first black President of that country.
Notes:
[1]The rest of Ireland becomes an independent country and adopted Republicanism. Northern Ireland (Protestant majority) elects to stay in the United Kingdom.
[2]Not to be confused with that state in the USA
[3]Becomes the separate nation of Slovakia and the Czech Republic
[4]Composed of Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro
After reading through this book, I have concluded that most of these events are totally ASB. Luckily, none of these events have occurred IOTL.
If anybody else has read this book, I would be interested in knowing your take on these events.
