DBWI Quayle's legacy

We all know Quayle was a one termer from 1996-2000, after his predecessor, George Bush.

I have to say his best bit was handling reconstruction of the Balkans and the Kosovo Crisis, as well as getting a rapproachment with the Iranians after so long a divide.

On the other hand, let us not forget that Philippines KLA Scandal either.

so what do you think?

I to this day find it hard to fault President Quayle for his handling of the Philippines KLA Scandal. He tried to walk that fine line between transparancy(I wish I had a dime for every time Al Gore said that word during the 2000 campaign) and trusting/showing loyalty to members of his administration. In the end, the only things he himself was guilty of were:
Not being as forthcoming with the American people as he should have been
Being too trusting of those under the cloud of suspicion within his administration
Attempting to minimize and deflect the scandal in ways that were silly, if not baffoonish

Quayle was a much better POTUS then I expected him to be. I'd venture to say that when the dust settles, historians and all of us "old enough to remember" will regard him as a decent, better then average President; like Truman is viewed perhaps.

I'd say that President Quayle's deserves more credit then most people give him today. He was an effective leader and helped to make some progress on reigning in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Many point to the fact that he was a one term president, but I have to remind you that election was very close. President Quayle lost to Governor Gore by relatively small electoral margin, and he had to contend with the Ron Paul running under the Reform Party ticket. The Republicans lost yes, but they had held the White House for twenty years extending that hold to twenty four years would have very difficult. Also President Allen's election last November proves that the Republican brand is still alive and well.
