DBWI Prussia wins War of Prussian succession

After Prussia took the Austrian province of Silesia in the War of the Austria succession, Austria ganged up on Prussia with France and Russia and in the War of Prussian succession reduced the Hohenzollerns to the province of Brandenburg. They also lost the royal title. This is overshadowed by the linked conflict between France and Britain, but I think it is still significant. What if Prussia had fended off its attackers?

The losses inevitably associated with such a success would force Prussia to look for a reapproachment with one of the former opponents, most probably as somewhat “junior partner”. With Russian official goal in that war being just preventing Prussian influence in the PLC and Russia not being excessively interested in the German affairs (unlike Hapsburgs and France), I think that this would be partner of a choice.

I can't see that happening within the realm of plausibility, even if Frederick II was a very skilled military commander there's no way the small Prussian state can repel the huge armies that France, Austria and Russia can muster. He definetely can the early battles against the Austrians but when the French from the west and Russians from the east come he's doomed. His only way to survive would be for Britain to send a large expeditionary force to the continent to help him resist, and maybe try to allign himself with anti-Russian factions in the PLC that could cut the Russian supply lines.

Well, situation would not be as tragic as you presented:)

French army of that time was in a sorry state with the army commanders (and their underlings) being often appointed by Mme Pompadour and general discipline almost absent.

Austrians learned something from the previous war but they were still very weak on the top: Charles of Lorraine was incompetent and Daun, while quite competent, lacked an aggressiveness. Plus, while in the issues of the general military administration Hofkriegsrat was useful, as a tool for directing a war it was an impediment.

Russians would not commit a “huge” army even if just because it did not have one (all the way to 1812) and could sent only a fraction of the forces it did have. Their army was still suffering from the same problems it had in the 1730s with an absense of the available high quality army commanders on the top of the numerous tactical and logistical problems. Plus, it would not take a crystal ball to predict that the Austrians would immideately start having problems with supplying their allies forcing Russians to establish supply bases in the PLC with the resulting limitations on the scope of their operationa and deteriorating relations with the allies. Plus, with EI being very seriously ill, Russian participation in the whole sharade was a matter of a limited time.

To be fair and balanced, problem with the anti-Russian forces within the PLC would be close to non-existent due to the Russian occupation.

So Fritz would need to play for time and as soon as Russia is out, he can sue for an acceptabke peace. If by that time he managed to gain something from the Austrians, he can call it a victory.
