A cartoon just came out in America that has resonated all the way over here in the British Empire. It is called Prometheus and Bob, and it covers the exploits of an alien called Prometheus who has been sent by his more enlightened society to see if humans - then still cavemen - are worth civilizing. The test subject is Bob, an extraordinarily dumb caveman who is dumb but nonetheless eager to learn. Then there is the monkey, who is smarter than Bob but not dedicated to the civilizing process but rather to his own savage impulses. Hilarity ensue as Prometheus' attempt to civilize Bob are undermined by Bob's stupidity and the monkey's hijinks but I think this cartoon has a lesson to teach us. To date the various non-western peoples have when left to their own devices either failed to industrialize (Japan, China) or opposed themselves to doing so (Tibet). India is an exception, but that is because they had our aid, and even then it was not easy for either of us. Now how do they thank us? By rallying the peoples of Asia to the cause of independence, for which they are ill prepared. The whole think makes me sick, how about you?
