On April 31st, 1953, President Robert A. Taft died of cancer, and Vice President William Knowland was sworn in. Knowland, widely seen as an internationalist in comparison to Taft. It can be assumed that if Taft didn't get cancer, his Presidency would've been radically different.

But by how much? Would have Taft abandoned the American allies like the UK, France, and West Germany, and pulled out of NATO?

Would Taft have been quicker to condemn McCarthyism privately in the Senate cloakrooms than Knowland?

Would Taft himself have been subject to redicule in the Presidency due to his supposed weakness on communism?
