DBWI: President Richard M. Nixon

As you all know, Hubert Humphrey defeated Richard M. Nixon in the controversial election of 1968, beating Nixon by a 44.2-41.9 popular vote margin, due to the so-called Halloween Peace. He would visit China, though his visit was widely criticized by Republicans and was not well received by the pubkic. As the war in Vietnam worsened, Humphrey would be defeated in 1972 by Ronald Reagan in an unprecedented landslide after the debates. While Vietnam remains divided today, many blamed Humphrey instead of Reagan for the failure to win the war.

Reagan would pursuit a monetarist policy, and forced Iran to transform into a constitutional democracy after the Crisis of 1978. While giving strong support to democratically elected Presidemt Jorge Alessandri of Chile, Reagan was widely blamed for sponsoring the junta responsible for the Dirty War in Argentina, as well as his silence in Park Chung-hee's bloody crackdown of the pro-democracy protests in 1980.

What if Nixon was President instead of Humphrey? Would he possibly win re-election? Would he still have gone to China, as stated in his memoirs? How would he deal with Vietnam? If not, who would have succeeded Nixon? Perhaps we would get a RFK presidency from 1973-81 instead of 1981-89? How would Kennedy deal with Iran, the military junta in Argentina and South Korea?

Assuming that he gets away with the Halloween Trick (thankfully butterflies away all scandals that end in -ween ), or Johnson pardons him like Humphrey did IOTL... Unlike most, I do think that Nixon would have gone to China like Humphrey did, though he surely wouldn't have Rockefeller as SecState to back him up. But Nixon didn't like to share that kind of credit at all anyways. I don't see him handling the economy as well. He probably vetoes part of Humphrey's domestic accomplishments (universal healthcare, universal childcare, the EPA, Clean Air Act, etc.), but less than one would think (domestic policy bored him). The economy ultimately brings him down in a landslide to Humphrey or RFK.

While Vietnam remains divided today, many blamed Humphrey instead of Reagan for the failure to win the war.

OOC: There was never any intention to conquer North Vietnam, so a divided Vietnam would mean there was victory right?

Even if he had lost to Nixon in '68 then Humphrey would have certainly been the Democratic candidate again in 1972. That would have been an amazing rematch to see.

Would the US 'officially' recognise the PRC? You know the largest nation on earth in terms of population, or would China have let the UK 'keep' Hong Kong and just sell every thing it makes through them as it did otl.

OOC: I assume this would be their response.

Humphrey's image is well rehabilitated by now really - he was a fine leader and I think if he'd beaten Reagan for another term he'd be remembered much more fondly. Most of what happened in Vietnam under Reagan's term, including the successes, were all from Humphrey's original withdrawl plans - but Reagan got all the credit because he was in the chair.

Nixon would've probably gotten us nuked in a week, the crazy bastard...

Well, on top of this, I can also say that without Ronnie Raygun in office, you might also butterfly the Able Archer Crisis in early October '79.....though if the Iranian Missile Crisis still happens in late October, early November 1984 as it did IOTL, a White House without Bobby Kennedy might still have a harder time dealing with that, even with a more moderate Republican(The Soviets were scared shitless about our Minuteman missiles down there; It took Kennedy several days to calm them down, and only on November 4th did talks resume, ending the crisis just 5 days later, when we pulled our nukes out of Iran, much to the chagrin of Tehran, of course.).

OOC: I though the POD was October 1968 with Nixon being caught intervening in the Paris Peace talks, after RFK was dead.

OCC: Wait so how exactly is Vietnam still divided today? Did something Humphrey do ensure a lasting peace?

OOC: if Bobby do not run why LBJ retire? OTL he withdraw his candidature and push his vice to run only aftter and because Bobby was running.

I think the only other thing who can stop LBJ's candidature is his death and in that case HHH will be a president running for the re election...

OOC: LBJ suffered a minor heart attack in 1968 in TTL, and ultimately decided against running for re-election. He would even live a year longer than in OTL.

Ok, his falling health can be a good reason for withdraw from the race, specially if he had the attack in public and thus all America will know that...
