After Coolidge's announcement that he would not be running for re-election in 1928 three major candidates emerged for the Republican nomination: Secretary Herbert Hoover, Governor Frank Lowden and Senator Charles Curtis. Although Hoover was initially a front-runner but his poor performance in the primaries and a grudge held by one of the party bosses eventually led to the party selecting Curtis for nomination.
